Overview of the Project

The "Rice-Fallow and Suitability Mapping for Four States of Eastern India"
A project funded by the Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers' Welfare (MA&FW), aims to map the rice-fallow areas and identify suitable rice-fallow areas using geospatial technology.

The project aspires to support the intervention towards an increase in cropping intensification and enhance productivity and profitability. The project sites are the states of Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal, and Chhattisgarh.

What is Rice-fallow ?

In South Asia, rice is the predominant crop and is typically cultivated during a single season of a year, after which the area often remains unutilized during the other seasons (Mutert et al, 2002). These unutilized areas are defined as rice fallows.
In the states of eastern India, a significant portion of potentially productive land remains fallow during the winter season (December onwards) following the monsoon rice crop.
